Prisoners Stage Mass Escape Amid Armed Clashes in Libya

Armed clashes in the Libyan cities of Zawiya and Surman have further worsened the security situation. Amid the clashes, it emerged that prisoners had escaped en masse from a prison in Surman. Reuters reported this, citing information from the country’s police Reuters reported.

The Judicial Police Department said the incident occurred on August 4. An investigation is currently underway. The number of prisoners who left the prison has not been disclosed. At the same time, a special commission has been established to identify and apprehend them.

Salim Bahr, one of the local leaders in Zawiya Libya Al-Ahrar said in a broadcast on the television channel, calling on all sides to stop the bloodshed.

“Whoever wins in this situation will ultimately be defeated,” he said.

According to him, three civilians were killed and several others suffered injuries of varying severity as a result of the clashes. No official information has yet been provided on which groups took part in the armed clashes or the exact cause of the conflict.
