Italy is planning to build the world’s largest cargo plane, Il Corriere Della Sera reported. The project, first designed in 2016, will see the aircraft reach a height comparable to a four-story building.
Named “WindRunner,” the aircraft is designed to transport massive cargo, especially the next generation of oversized wind turbines. The project is based on the research of Mark Lundstrom, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and renewable energy expert.
With a length of 108 meters and a wingspan of 80 meters, “WindRunner” will have a flight range of up to 2,000 kilometers. Agreements have already been signed with Leonardo, Magnaghi Aerospace, Aernnova, as well as companies from the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
The initiative is expected to attract several billion euros in investments and create at least 2,500 new jobs, with indirect jobs potentially five times higher. The project’s implementation is planned to begin by the end of the year.
