Did India surpass China in rice production?

In 2025, India became the world leader in rice production. This year, the country produced 150 million tons of rice, surpassing China in this indicator. This was reported by the Economic Times, citing India's Minister of Agriculture, Shivraj Singh Choehan.

The Minister noted that the creation of high-yielding seed varieties played an important role in achieving such a result. The government of Narendra Modi has registered 3,236 high-yielding varieties in the country since 2014. For comparison, 3,969 new varieties were created during the previous 45 years.

According to Choukhan, India was previously a country experiencing food shortages, but today it has become a global food supplier.

"We have surpassed China in rice production, and now we plan to supply our products to foreign markets," the minister said.

According to the data, 145.28 million tons of rice were grown in China in 2025. Thus, India became the world's leading rice producer.
