A study conducted by scientists at the Karolinska Institute has shown that severe asthma poses a serious threat to human health. The scientific findings were published in the European Respiratory Journal.
During the study, more than 11,000 asthma patients were monitored over a 20-year period. According to the results, the mortality rate among those with the severe form of the disease reached 34 percent. In mild and moderate cases, this figure was approximately 20 percent.
Experts note that severe asthma almost doubles the likelihood of premature death. However, the disease itself is rarely the direct cause of death — the primary risk is posed by comorbidities.
According to the researchers, asthma causes a strong inflammatory process in the body. This negatively affects blood vessel function, reduces their elasticity, and disrupts blood circulation. As a result, the risk of heart attack, stroke, and thrombosis increases.
Furthermore, patients with severe asthma have a higher probability of developing oncological diseases. Frequent attacks place excessive strain on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
Experts point out that severe asthma occurs in only 3–8 percent of all patients. Nevertheless, this specific group requires constant medical supervision, as they are much more vulnerable to the risk of complications.
