Natural Plant Identified to Slow Brain Aging

A new study conducted by scientists at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul has shown that American basil extract can slow brain aging, as well as reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. The results of the scientific work were published in the journal Nutrients.
Experts conducted experiments on rats to analyze the effect of the supplement on the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory and learning processes.
According to the results, compounds in basil reduce the amount of reactive oxygen species that appear during metabolism and damage cells.
It is reported that the excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species causes oxidative stress. This condition negatively affects brain cell function, potentially degrading neuronal membranes and slowing the transmission of nerve impulses.

At the same time, it was noted that basil extract prevented damage to hippocampal cell membranes and reduced the levels of pro-inflammatory molecules TNF-α and IL-1β. Scientists believe that high levels of these molecules exacerbate neuroinflammation and accelerate brain aging.
Biochemical analyses showed that basil contains high amounts of rosmarinic and chlorogenic acids, which have strong antioxidant properties. Researchers emphasize that these substances provide the neuroprotective effect that protects brain cells.
Experts suggest that these results could enable the development of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals based on American basil extract in the future. However, further scientific research is required to determine the optimal dosage and form for the human body.
