
On May 17, a strong dust storm and powerful winds were observed in Tashkent city and the surrounding region. This natural event significantly affected not only the weather but also daily life in the capital. In particular, air pollution levels in Tashkent ranked the highest among major cities worldwide.
Health Ministry and Sanitary Committee issued warnings
Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Health advised residents to avoid going outside unless necessary. In urgent situations, citizens were encouraged to contact the “103” emergency medical service. The Sanitary and Epidemiological Committee also advised avoiding outdoor activity until the air clears, and recommended wearing medical masks or respirators when going out.
Additionally, using humidifiers or hanging wet towels indoors and increasing water intake were suggested.
Tree falls and power outages recorded in several areas
The strong wind and dust caused several disruptions in the city. Fallen trees, broken branches, and polluted streets were reported. In response, emergency teams in Tashkent city and region were put on full alert.
To ensure safety, some electric networks were manually shut down. As a result, 8,500 consumers in Tashkent and 10,300 in the region experienced temporary power outages.
