Violence against women increased by 121 percent in six months

In the first half of this year, the number of cases of pressure and violence against women and girls in our country has sharply increased. According to the press service of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, compared to the same period last year, this figure has risen by 121 percent.

Member of the Senate Committee on Youth, Women, Culture, and Sports Issues Malika Qodirkhonova sent a senator's request to the Chairwoman of the Committee on Family and Women’s Affairs, Zulaykho Mahkamova. According to her, the goal is to study the effectiveness of the work being carried out to protect women’s rights and prevent violence.

Behind the numbers — the situation

Across the republic, in the first half of 2024, 48,303 cases of violence and pressure were recorded. This is twice as many as in the same period last year. The highest number of cases was recorded in Tashkent region — 9,414, in Bukhara — 5,612, in Kashkadarya — 5,268, and in Andijan region — 4,808. During this period, 930 women were issued repeat protection orders.

Senator’s initiative

In her request, Malika Qodirkhonova sent a series of questions to the committee and its regional branches. In particular, she demanded substantiated information about the measures being taken to identify the causes leading to pressure and violence, to strengthen preventive work, to develop cooperation with competent authorities, and to form an atmosphere of zero tolerance towards such phenomena in neighborhoods.

Experts’ opinion

According to analysts, despite the existence of laws and legal mechanisms, the surge in the problem is linked to certain social, psychological, and economic factors in society. They emphasize that it is important not only to toughen punishment measures but also to expand education, outreach, and the network of support centers.
