In Tashkent, a sentence was handed down to a 20-year-old man born in Kashkadarya, who had been preparing dangerous subversive acts, and he was sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment. After the case was reviewed in the Yakkasaray district criminal court, certain media outlets misinterpreted the situation, prompting official bodies to provide clarification.
According to investigation materials, since 2023 T.N. had independently begun studying religious knowledge through the internet, and during this process fell under the influence of extremist and terrorist groups’ ideas. He expressed sharp opposition to the reforms being carried out in the country and entered into online communication with members of the “Tavhid va jihod katibasi,” a terrorist organization recognized by the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan and banned in the country, operating in Syria.
After that, through his personal Instagram page, he established close contact with militants in Syria, and under their influence his views became even more radical. Importantly, he also searched for ways to leave for Syria in order to take part in combat operations and join the ranks of the terrorist organization.
T.N. also stored and distributed prohibited extremist and terrorist materials through the internet and prepared to carry out subversive actions in the territory of Tashkent city.
The charges were brought under several articles of the Criminal Code relating to terrorism and extremism. Although the sanctions under these articles provide for long-term imprisonment, the court, taking into account mitigating circumstances, imposed a sentence of 6 years.
The parties were also informed that if they were dissatisfied with the verdict of the court of first instance, they have the right to file an appeal or cassation complaint or submit a protest in accordance with the law.
