New regulations for tobacco and alcohol in public places

Another important document aimed at ensuring a healthy environment in public places is expected to be adopted in Uzbekistan. According to a draft order developed by the Ministry of Health, the procedure for placing warning signs, information boards, and medical notices regarding the consumption of alcohol and tobacco products is planned to be clearly defined.
The draft mandates the installation of clear and visible signs indicating that the consumption of tobacco and alcohol is prohibited in public places. At the same time, it is required to place boards that provide citizens with complete information about where such products can or cannot be used.
Under the new regulations, individuals and organizations that own or operate public areas, buildings, facilities, and public transport will bear special responsibility. Based on the established regulations, they will be required to:
- install warning signs stating that the consumption of alcohol and tobacco products is prohibited;
- place information boards regarding specially designated areas;
- and prepare and display medical warnings in visible locations in such areas.
Furthermore, existing regulatory documents will also be addressed. In particular, samples of signs that must be displayed at retail outlets and catering facilities were already approved by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 75, adopted on February 13, 2003. It specifies samples of warning signs regarding the prohibition of tobacco and nicotine product consumption, as well as information boards about special areas and medical notices.
According to experts, these measures will serve to promote a healthy lifestyle among the population, reduce health risks in public places, and protect citizens from harmful habits.
The main issue now is the extent to which these rules will be implemented in practice. Because it is not the law on paper, but its application in real life that will have a genuine impact on society.
