Tomorrow, Manchester City will face Aston Villa in a Premier League clash. Ahead of the match, City’s manager Pep Guardiola held a press conference where he addressed several key topics.
On Central Defenders
Guardiola expressed confidence in his current defensive lineup, stating that signing new centre-backs is not currently necessary:
“I don’t think we need new central defenders. We already have enough players in that position. We signed two young centre-backs in the winter. But of course, we’ll assess the situation as it develops,” said the coach.
On O’Riley’s Performance
The manager praised O’Riley’s performance, especially considering he is playing out of position:
“I’m impressed with how he’s adapting to a role that’s not natural for him. He’s learning. Of course, there’s room for improvement, but he’s excellent on the ball. I’m sure if he plays in midfield, every pass he makes will be as dangerous as a penalty kick,” said Pep.
“He’s got a powerful shot, performs well in tight spaces, and is proving to be a big help for us.”
On Joško Gvardiol
Guardiola also highlighted the solid partnership between Joško Gvardiol and Rúben Dias, hinting they could be the go-to duo in defence next season:
“I like how Joško plays. His speed, especially with his left foot, is a real asset. I think both he and Rúben are not only great players but also great people. They work very well together at the back. So yes, this pairing might continue next season as well,” said the manager.
On Aston Villa
Pep didn’t hold back praise for their upcoming opponent:
“I was surprised, in a good way, watching them play against my friend Luis Enrique’s team. Aston Villa defends deep and transitions to counterattacks very effectively. The team from Birmingham is well-structured and highly disciplined,” he noted.
