UEFA is considering the possibility of abolishing extra time in the Champions League knockout stages from next season. According to Bild, the European football governing body is studying the opinion of clubs on amending the Champions League regulations.
Currently, if there is a draw in the results of two games in the playoffs, the teams compete in extra time. According to the new proposal, if the score is tied, the winner is immediately determined through a penalty shootout. This change is expected to significantly reduce the physical load on the players.
At the same time, it is proposed that the top eight teams in the general standings and directly qualified for the semi-finals be given the right to play second legs at home against the teams in lower places in all stages of the playoffs. This rule currently applies only to the semi-finals.
In addition, the issue of separating clubs from the same country until the quarter-finals is also being discussed. The reason for this is that matches between clubs from the same country in the preliminary rounds are considered uninteresting for fans and broadcasters.
The final decision on changes to the Champions League regulations can be made by the UEFA Competitions Committee at the UEFA Assembly in Munich on May 30. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
