"Fenerbahçe" head coach José Mourinho recently expressed his thoughts in an interview about the importance of adapting to the squad and sticking to ideas. According to him, some coaches firmly hold onto ideas that do not work and end up failing, stating, "If you die with the idea, you're a fool."
Mourinho specifically pointed to Josep Guardiola's actions at "Manchester City." He said that Guardiola completely rebuilt the defense, and at the same time, he criticized the acquisitions of additional goalkeepers, such as David Bravo and Ederson. Mourinho believes that not adapting the system to the squad leads to failure.
“It's difficult to add the ball into the game through defense with a bad goalkeeper. I remember in Guardiola's 'City,' Joe Hart was there — he was the best English goalkeeper. But he brought Bravo, and that wasn't enough. Then he bought Ederson.”
Mourinho pointed out that some coaches, despite failure, hold on to their ideas, saying, "I didn't give up on my idea." He added: "If you perish with an idea, then you're a fool. A coach must adapt to the existing squad."
Mourinho’s path as a coach has been complex, and he has adapted even to chaotic teams. He was appointed as the head coach of "Fenerbahçe" in 2024 and is now planning to take on new challenges with the club.
