The Portuguese national team held a ceremony dedicated to the memory of three figures in the history of the country's football - through this event, the team once again paid tribute to the memory of its legends and modern stars.
A bronze monument was erected at the national team base in honor of the deceased footballer Diogo Jota. The heads of the country's football federation, prominent political figures, renowned agent Jorge Mendes, and An Nasr forward Cristiano Ronaldo also attended the grand opening ceremony.
The ceremony also commemorated Euro 2000 bronze medalist Jorge Costa, who died in August, and André Silva, who died in a car accident along with Jota in July. The incident reportedly occurred in Spain in July: while Jota was driving her car at high speed with her brother André Silva, the wheel cracked, the car fell into a ditch, and caught fire.
The Liverpool player and his companion died at the scene. The club completely withdrew Jota's number from circulation - the Merseyside club showed respect for the striker's memory with this decision. As the team's head coach, Arne Slot, admitted, during one of the English Premier League matches, he, as usual, wanted to call up Jota for replacement, looking for him with his eyes on the bench - this fact once again reminded him of what a heavy loss it was for the whole club.
As a reminder, Portugal will play two matches in the Euro 2026 qualifiers in September: first, against Armenia on September 6th, and then against Hungary on September 9th. In short, after the event, which was held in a spirit of mourning and respect, the national team continues to prepare for its next tasks on the sports stage.
