World Cup 2026 Qualifiers Dispute: Nigeria Accuses Congo of "Fraud"

Controversy in WC 2026 qualifiers: Nigeria accuses DR Congo of 'fraud'!

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has made an unexpected move: They have submitted an official complaint to FIFA against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) national team. At the core of the controversy are suspicious documents and legal violations related to the players' nationality.

A bold step after defeat

It should be noted that the Nigerian national team lost their chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after being defeated by DR Congo in a penalty shootout during the decisive qualifying round. Following the victory, the Congolese team advanced to the intercontinental playoff phase.

However, the Nigerian side argues that the result was unjust. According to a report by "ESPN," the complaint questions the legitimacy of six to nine players in DR Congo's squad. These players were born in Europe (including France and the Netherlands, among other countries) and hold dual citizenship.

Legal conflict: FIFA and DR Congo

According to Nigerian Football Federation Secretary-General Mohammed Sanusi, DR Congo's domestic laws prohibit dual citizenship.

Mohammed Sanusi: "The rules are very clear. Under DR Congo's laws, it is illegal to hold dual citizenship. Many of their players still hold European passports. FIFA only checks its own regulations, and as long as the documents are provided, players are allowed to participate. However, we claim that FIFA has been deceived. This is outright fraud!"

Nigerians believe that the players have not fully complied with the process of renouncing their European citizenship, which violates international standards.

Why is this important for Uzbekistan?

This situation is not only significant for Africa but also carries implications for Uzbekistan's national team. If DR Congo successfully progresses through the playoff games, they could potentially face Uzbekistan in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If FIFA upholds Nigeria's complaint, there is a possibility the identity of Uzbekistan's group opponent could change.

When will a decision be made?

A final ruling on Nigeria's complaint is expected to be announced before the intercontinental playoff matches begin in March. If fraud allegations are proven, DR Congo may be disqualified from the tournament, and Nigeria could be reinstated in the World Cup.
