
Matvey Safonov delivered a stellar performance in the Intercontinental Cup final between PSG and Flamengo. After both regulation time and extra time ended in a 1-1 draw, the winner was determined through a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, the Russian goalkeeper saved four consecutive shots, becoming the hero of the match. According to Opta statistics specialists, Safonov became the first goalkeeper in the 21st century to save four penalties in a post-match shootout while playing for PSG.
In doing so, he opened a new chapter in the history of the Paris club. Safonov began the 2025/2026 season as the team’s second-choice goalkeeper.
