Matvey Safonov sets a historic record in the Champions League

PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov has made history as the first Russian footballer to win the Champions League twice. The Parisian club defeated Arsenal in a penalty shootout in the final to claim the prestigious trophy for the second time in their history.
According to TASS, Safonov also won the Champions League title with PSG in 2025. Back then, the Parisians thrashed Inter 5-0 in the final, but the Russian goalkeeper watched from the bench and did not play. This time, however, he played the entire final match.
The decisive match against Arsenal ended in a draw after regular and extra time. PSG prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shootout, securing their second consecutive European title. For Safonov, this victory holds a special place in his career.
Last year, Safonov was recognized as the fifth Russian footballer to win the Champions League. Previously, the trophy was won by Igor Dobrovolskiy with Marseille in 1993, Vladimir But with Borussia Dortmund in 1997, Dmitriy Alenichev with Porto in 2004, and Denis Cheryshev with Real Madrid in 2016.
Now, unlike them, Matvey Safonov has become the first Russian player to win the Champions League twice. This achievement ensures his name is etched in football history.
In short, PSG's victory in Budapest was of historic significance not only for the Parisian club but also for Matvey Safonov. A goalkeeper who became a champion from the bench a year ago, this time he played the full final and wrote his name in Champions League history in even bolder letters.
