Cherchesov Evaluates Safonov's Consecutive Saves of Four Penalties

“Akhmat” head coach Stanislav Cherchesov commented on PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov’s performance during the 2025 Intercontinental Cup final against “Flamengo.” The match ended 1-1 after regular and extra time.

The French club secured victory in the penalty shootout. Safonov played the entire game and played a decisive role in the shootout by saving four consecutive penalties.

Cherchesov noted that he was unable to watch the game from start to finish; however, the coach emphasized that such a result in a penalty shootout is extremely rare, underlining the goalkeeper’s exceptional skill.

“Saving four in a row is an extremely rare occurrence. It says a lot about his talent.

Congratulations to Matvey,” Cherchesov was quoted as saying by the “Championship” publication. Safonov was ultimately named the best player of the match.
