Former “Lokomotiv” football player Dmitriy Sennikov has expressed his opinion on the situation regarding the reconsideration of the title of the Russian national team's all-time top scorer. The discussions were triggered by FIFA's decision to change the attribution of a goal from a friendly match between Russia and Germany in 2005.
The goal is now officially credited to Aleksandr Kerzhakov. However, Sennikov emphasized that the episode was controversial and believes that the decisive shot was actually delivered by Andrey Arshavin.
“It can be seen that the ball didn’t cross the line. Perhaps, due to the combination of actions and initiative, they decided to reattribute the goal.
But it was Arshavin who scored,” Sennikov was quoted as saying by the publication “Sport Den za Dnyom.” At the same time, Sennikov noted that Kerzhakov's appeal to the Russian Football Union is his legal right and highlighted that Aleksandr’s skill level and career achievements make him worthy of the title of the national team’s top scorer.
