In Matchweek 19 of the Premier League, Liverpool hosted Leeds, but neither side managed to score — 0–0. After the game, Reds head coach Arne Slot openly explained the reasons for the draw: the team wanted to start the year with a win, but the opponent’s compact defense and bad luck ruined the plan.
Slot noted that breaking down Leeds’ tight defensive line was not easy. Liverpool created chances but failed to turn them into goals.
“We aimed to start the year with a win, but it was difficult. We struggled to break through the opponent’s compact defense. In the chances we created, luck wasn’t on our side,” Slot said.
The coach added that they needed to make the most of set pieces. However, this time neither corners nor free kicks worked.
“We had to use our set pieces. Unfortunately, we didn’t score from any of them. With Virgil and Frimpong, we came close to scoring several times in one-on-one situations,” Slot said.
For the record, Liverpool are currently 4th in the Premier League table with 33 points. The Reds’ next test will be against Fulham in London on January 4. In short, the draw is an “early-season brake,” and Slot now expects precision and efficiency against Fulham.
