At the current Australian Open, American tennis player Vinus Williams once again came to the forefront of the tennis world. At 45 years and 215 days old, Williams set a record as the oldest female player to compete in the main draw of the tournament.
Williams was included in the tournament by wild card and fought against Serbian Olga Danilović in the first round. The match was very tough: the first set was decided in favor of Vinus on a tie-break (7:6, 7:5), and then Danilovich found his game and won the other two sets - 3:6, 4:6.
Notably, this was Venus's first return to the big stage in Melbourne five years later. That is, he reappeared as a "living legend" for both the fans and the tournament itself.
Yes, the result stopped after the first round. But the main idea of this game is different: Vinus set a record and, with so many years of experience, character, and name, added another "big story" to the tournament. In short, sometimes defeat is written on the scoreboard, but victory remains in history.
Williams will now compete in the doubles at the Australian Open. She will play alongside Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, and their match is scheduled for January 20th. Alexandrova also lost in the first round in the singles category.
Vinus's past in Melbourne is also very rich: he reached the singles final twice (2003 and 2017), and the doubles title four times (2001, 2003, 2009, 2010), and the mixed title in 1998.
This incident reminds us of something else: in big sports, there is a number called "age," but there is also a separate league called "spirit." Vinus is currently playing in this very league - and the fans cannot remain indifferent.
