Emery fumed after Everton defeat as interview turned icy

After Aston Villa’s 0–1 home loss to Everton in Matchweek 22 of the Premier League, head coach Unai Emery appeared far sharper than usual in front of the media. That the defeat was a heavy blow for the Birmingham side was clearly felt throughout the interview.
According to Sky Sports, the Spanish coach often replied with just one or two words. At times, some questions were left unanswered altogether. Both those in the studio and fans watching on air felt Emery was not hiding his “inner frustration” and “anger.”
In his post-match remarks, Emery also spoke openly about the team’s realistic targets. He stressed that Aston Villa are not yet among the main contenders in the race for the league’s top five.
“We are not among the contenders to finish in the top five. We are still not there. There are other teams with higher potential than us,” said the Birmingham side’s coach.
Former players Ashley Young and Jamie Redknapp, who analysed the game in the Sky Sports studio, also highlighted the interview. They called Emery’s appearance “strange” and “unusual,” noting he was far from his typically clear and composed style.
In short, the narrow defeat to Everton changed more than just the scoreline—it changed the mood. Now Aston Villa’s key question is how they regroup after this test: in the Premier League, a single sulk won’t do, and they’ll have to respond in the next round.
