The former head coach said that Tottenham cannot be called a top club

Former Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglou has expressed a harsh but frank opinion about the Londoners. He claims that no matter how "European standard" the club's infrastructure is, its spending policy and ambitions do not meet the requirements of a top club.
Under the specialist, Tottenham won the Europa League in the 2024/25 season. However, despite this, Postecoglou was dismissed from his position in October 2025. That is, there is a trophy - but no stability. And this is precisely what became his main objection.
Postecoglou contrasted the club's external appearance with its internal reality:
"Of course, Tottenham have built a wonderful stadium and a modern training ground. But if you look at the costs, especially the salary structure, this is not a top club. I saw it myself, because we went into the transfer market and did not bring in the right players," he said.
That is, it is not about a "beautiful project", but about the fact that a top club is understood not only as a building, but also as a determination in transfers, an open hand in strengthening the squad, and a constant demand for trophies. Postecoglou openly spoke about the obstacles in the transfer policy, in the sense that "we did not get the right players."
His second blow is about the mentality of the club. Postecoglou stressed that there is a psychological barrier at Tottenham, and that “talking about trophies” is not easily accepted within the club:
“I tried to change the mentality at Tottenham. In our second year, I talked about winning trophies for the club. Nobody dared to say it at the club - they were afraid. The team came close to winning the title several times. Finally, we won the trophy and overcame that barrier. And what did they do? They destroyed everything and started from scratch. I wonder what they want to achieve?” he said in an interview with ESPN.
These words are not just a simple insult, they are a painful accusation that “they themselves destroyed what I built”. Because the coach’s logic is simple: if you win a trophy, the next step is to build on it. Tottenham, in his opinion, chose the opposite path.
For your information, the Londoners are currently in 16th place in the Premier League table with 29 points. Moreover, the club announced yesterday — February 11 — that it has also dismissed head coach Thomas Frank. So, the series of “restarts” at Tottenham has not stopped yet.
In short, what Postecoglou is saying is in one sentence — the stadium does not make a top club, decisions and ambition do. For a fan, this is a very familiar feeling: “everything is there, only the system and determination are not enough.” Now the question is one — what does the club really want: trophies or to preserve the “project”?
