Dino Baggio: Serie A went through a “golden era”

Former Italy national team footballer Dino Baggio shared his memories of Serie A in the 1990s. According to him, at that time the Italian championship was one of the strongest and most prestigious leagues in world football.

“Everyone wanted to come here. The best foreign footballers played here. Perhaps there were fewer of them than today, but they were all world-class stars. Clubs also had much stricter standards when selecting players,” — Baggio says.

According to him, at that time Serie A, together with the English Premier League, was considered one of the most competitive championships. Italian football experienced a true “golden era”.

Recalling the stars of that period, Baggio notes that at “Milan” there were Dutch legends Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard, while at “Inter” there were German stars Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme and Jürgen Klinsmann. In addition, Brazilian masters of the 1980s — Zico and Paulo Falcão — also had a major impact on Italian football.

In his opinion, at that time Ballon d’Or winners also enriched Serie A. Today, however, the situation has changed: the best players choose Spain, England or France, while those who remain or are left out of other options move to Italy.

Baggio’s words were quoted by AS.
