Legendary Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has decided to return to the national team for the 2026 World Cup. Although the Bayern Munich shot-stopper ended his international career in 2024, he agreed to reclaim his position following negotiations with head coach Julian Nagelsmann. According to Sky Sport, the 40-year-old goalkeeper reached an agreement with head coach Julian Nagelsmann and Germany national team director Rudi Völler. Nagelsmann emphasized that he is very pleased with the experienced goalkeeper's current form and his winning mentality.
Neuer's return comes as an unexpected blow to Oliver Baumann. Although the Hoffenheim goalkeeper played in the starting lineup during the qualifying stage, he is now expected to move to the bench. Nevertheless, Baumann stated that he has not lost confidence and will continue his preparations after a conversation with the coach.
With this decision, the Germany national team aims to bring back the 2014 champion to ensure stability in the defensive line. Neuer's first matches could coincide with friendly games at the end of May or early June.
