DR Congo's World Cup participation in doubt

An unexpected situation has arisen surrounding DR Congo, who were drawn into the same group as the Uzbekistan national team for the World Cup finals. The participation of the African representatives, who are set to compete in Group K alongside Uzbekistan, Portugal, and Colombia, is currently in doubt.
This is due to an Ebola outbreak in the country. Ahead of a massive tournament like the World Cup, it is crucial that every participating team meets not only sports preparation standards but also medical safety requirements. Especially considering the tournament is hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, it is natural for the host nations to take health issues very seriously.
In an interview with ESPN, US official Andrew Giuliani emphasized that DR Congo players must undergo a mandatory 21-day quarantine in Belgium, where they are currently training. If this requirement is not met, the team may be denied entry into the USA due to the high risk of disease transmission.
This situation could become a serious problem for DR Congo. A 21-day quarantine during the World Cup preparation phase could disrupt the team's plans, training rhythm, and friendly matches. However, it is clear that safety requirements take precedence over sporting results.
Giuliani added that American organizers are paying great attention to the health and safety of World Cup participants and visiting fans. Therefore, the rules will be strict for all teams, and it will not be easy for anyone to receive special exceptions.
This situation is also significant for the Uzbekistan national team, as DR Congo is a direct rival in Group K. Given the presence of strong teams like Portugal and Colombia in the group, the status, squad, and preparation level of every opponent are of great importance.
Of course, there is no definitive decision yet regarding the exclusion of DR Congo from the tournament. However, their participation in the World Cup depends on how they comply with quarantine requirements and medical safety measures. This has further intensified the intrigue in Group K ahead of the World Cup.
As a reminder, the 2026 World Cup will kick off on June 11 at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The Uzbekistan national team will participate in this highly anticipated tournament for the first time in history.
In short, the situation surrounding the DR Congo team has become more about medical safety than sports. If the team fulfills the quarantine requirements, the path to the World Cup will be open. Otherwise, there could be a major change in Group K. In football, sometimes it is not a defender who stops an opponent, but a protocol — and this time, the situation looks exactly like that.
