A real 'Uzbek storm' has blown across the green fields of Turkey! For the leader and top scorer of the Uzbekistan national team, the skillful striker Eldor Shomurodov, the current year 2026, which hosts the World Cup, has been successful and full of victories. Our 30-year-old compatriot proudly defended the colors of Istanbul Başakşehir this season. Throughout the championship, he found the back of the net 22 times and became the absolute top scorer of the Turkish Süper Lig! In addition, Eldor provided 5 assists to his teammates.
This productivity from Shomurodov led Başakşehir to a respectable 5th place in the league table, securing the team a spot in next season's UEFA Conference League.
Historical memory: This competition is no stranger to Eldor. In 2022, as part of the Italian club Roma, he became the first historical winner of this tournament. Now, he will strive for success in European competitions once again.
The iron men who played the most minutes
Experts have also compiled a ranking of the most consistent players who spent the most time on the pitch during the season. Remarkably, our compatriot is among the leaders in this list as well!
Mateusz Lis (1st place): The 29-year-old Polish goalkeeper of Göztepe played in all 34 matches of the season, 3060 minutes recording the highest result. He kept a clean sheet in 16 games. (Interesting fact: Göztepe was one of only three teams against which league top scorer Shomurodov could not score).
Amine Cherni (2nd place): The Tunisian player from Göztepe participated in all 34 matches and spent 3008 minutes on the pitch.
Eldor Shomurodov (3rd place): Our forward also graced the top three! Starting all of Başakşehir's games in the main lineup, Eldor played a total of 2928 minutes.
Kenneth Paal (4th place): The Dutch defender participated in all matches, but his team, Antalyaspor, was relegated to the lower league.
The most interesting and unexpected facts of the season
The past football year was also distinguished by the different tactics teams used regarding their squad rotation:
Real 'personnel turnover': Konyaspor set a record by fielding 43 different players in one season. Eyüpspor came in second, using 40 players.
Transfers didn't help: Although Fenerbahçe relied on 38 players throughout the season, they still lost the title race to their eternal rival, Galatasaray.
Stability and efficiency: Alanyaspor coach João Pereira finished the season with only 26 players and kept the team in the league. Eldor's team, Başakşehir, used only 27 players to reach the top five and qualify for Europe.
