One of the global leaders in artificial intelligence technologies, the U.S.-based company OpenAI, will remain under the governance of a non-profit organization, contrary to earlier plans. This was announced by the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, in an official letter to employees.
The letter states that OpenAI will transition from a limited liability company for public benefit to a corporate governance system aimed at protecting the interests of civil society. At the same time, full control over the company will remain in the hands of a non-profit governing body.
“Before making this important decision, we listened to the recommendations of civil society leaders. We also held negotiations with the offices of the attorneys general of California and Delaware. As a result, OpenAI will remain under non-profit governance. We look forward to further negotiations with Microsoft and the newly appointed members of the non-profit board to thoroughly develop all future plans,” wrote Sam Altman in his letter.
It is noted that earlier the company leadership had planned to convert OpenAI into a fully commercial governance model to retain employees and attract new investors. However, that plan was abandoned, and the company will remain committed to its original non-profit mission.
OpenAI has defined its primary goal as using artificial intelligence technologies for the benefit of humanity. Founded in 2015, the company’s co-founders include the well-known entrepreneur Elon Musk. Initially, Musk and Sam Altman co-chaired the board. From the start, the organization’s main task was to conduct AI research for the benefit of humanity.
However, in 2018, Elon Musk left the company, dissatisfied with its commercialization, and the management fully transferred to Sam Altman. Microsoft Corporation became OpenAI’s strategic partner, investing heavily in the company in recent years, which helped position OpenAI as a leader in the field of artificial intelligence.
The company’s new decision was positively received by the public. According to experts, OpenAI remaining a non-profit structure will allow greater focus on scientific research and expand the potential for developing AI technologies in a safe and beneficial manner.
Currently, OpenAI is world-renowned for its GPT models, particularly the ChatGPT product, which has helped millions of users simplify daily life and work processes.
Following this new decision, the development and safe use of these technologies for the benefit of humanity is expected to be under even greater scrutiny. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
