Internet access in Russia is becoming increasingly limited. In August, the government blocked calls through WhatsApp and Telegram. These apps play an important role in the lives of millions of people. Experts view this as an attempt by the authorities to tighten control.
Amid the restrictions, a new app called “Max” was launched. It is being pre-installed on all new devices by default. Officials promote it as a “super-app” that combines government services and payments. However, there is a risk that users’ data could fall into the hands of the state.
Through the Max app, users can make payments, access government services, and quickly obtain various information. Authorities describe it as convenient, but concerns over personal data security remain strong. At the same time, in many regions mobile internet is completely cut off, making daily life more difficult.
Schools are now required to move parents’ chats to Max. In some regions, the app is connected to emergency services. Experts compare this process to China’s strict internet control. People try to bypass restrictions using VPNs, but this is becoming increasingly difficult.
