The United Kingdom is again demanding iCloud data from Apple

The UK Home Office sent a new technical request — a Technical Capability Notice — to Apple at the beginning of September, Rozetked reported, citing a Financial Times source. According to this, Apple is required to provide access to encrypted iCloud backup data of British users.

In January 2025, the UK government issued a document envisaging global access to encrypted user data. Apple appealed this decision and disabled the Advanced Data Protection — that is, the function protecting continuously encrypted data — in the United Kingdom.

In August, US National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard claimed that the UK withdrew this request under pressure from Washington. However, according to Financial Times sources, the US is no longer applying pressure and London has resumed its plans.

The human rights organization Privacy International warned that creating access to data for just one country could weaken the security of users worldwide. Apple and the UK Home Office have so far not commented on the situation.
