The Russian government plans to drastically change the rules for using smartphones. According to the new initiative, smartphones not included in the state register may become completely unavailable in the future.
According to reports, starting from 2028, only smartphones with an IMEI code entered into the official database will be allowed to be used. In addition, from 2027, the IMEI will be strictly linked to the phone number. This means that an unregistered device cannot be used even by replacing a SIM card.
The most controversial aspect is that IMEI registration will be paid. The registration price is planned to be set depending on the value of the smartphone. That is, an expensive device is an expensive list.
Through this, the authorities aim to limit the circulation of phones in the "black market," stop the use of stolen devices, and strengthen control. However, experts are concerned that this decision will cause additional costs and inconvenience for citizens.
