Now TikTok knows age from a post: New controls in Europe

TikTok intends to start implementing more robust age-sensitive technologies in the EU. According to Reuters, this decision was made after pressure from regulators and the results of a one-year pilot project.
The new system will help ByteDance analyze the user's profile information, posted videos, and various behavioral signals to determine whether the account may be a minor (especially under 13 years old). The most important point: such accounts will not be automatically "baned" - special moderators will check first.
If a user is marked as incorrectly young, there are also appeal mechanisms: sources mention methods such as age estimation by face (e.g., Yoti), bank card verification, or document verification.
Against this backdrop, political pressure to protect children online has also increased in Europe: in November 2025, the European Parliament supported proposals such as restricting social networks to the age of 16 (parental consent between 13 and 16, and a strict ban on those under 13) to protect minors.
