Microsoft admits Windows 11 still contains Windows 95 code

Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich has openly admitted that the Windows 11 operating system is still built on the Win32 architecture from the 1990s. The Win32 API interface first appeared during the Windows 95 and Windows NT era and remains the foundation of the system today. This is reported by Ixbt.com .
The expert emphasized that the preservation of this legacy software layer is no accident. Many modern applications, technologies, and entire user ecosystems are built on this very foundation. Russinovich recalled that in the 90s, people dreamed of flying cars and lunar bases by 2026, but no one expected that Win32 would still play such a critical role in the computer world.
Nevertheless, the Microsoft representative does not consider this platform outdated or obsolete. On the contrary, it is precisely the high level of flexibility and extensive support that has ensured Win32 remains relevant for decades.
Throughout its history, the company has repeatedly attempted to replace the old architecture with new APIs and platforms like WinRT. However, none of these attempts could fully displace Win32. For this reason, decades-old code retains its critical importance in today's Windows 11 system.
