General Catalyst's viral ad: Competition in the VC world

One of the most discussed events in the venture capital world this week was the unique marketing offensive by General Catalyst (GC). The company posted a video on X titled "VC vs GC," parodying Apple's famous "Mac vs. PC" ads. In the video, the "VC" character is portrayed in a way that alludes to Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) co-founder Marc Andreessen. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
In the video, "VC" praises an AI-powered robot dog and emphasizes its superiority over real dogs. In response, the GC representative reminds them of the importance of responsibility and real values, sarcastically criticizing their opponent's approach. The video ends with the robot dog chasing "VC" away.
This post reached over 2.4 million views in a short time, causing a major stir. Many are interpreting this as an open attack by General Catalyst against a16z. Through this message, GC aimed to show that other venture funds, particularly a16z, invest in any project, while they are much more selective.
Although this argument seems valid, analysts pointed out that GC also has controversial projects in its portfolio, such as Anduril and Polymarket. While both sides have their own investment strategies, such marketing tactics clearly demonstrate how intense the competition in the venture capital market has become.
