TSMC reports first profit from its Japan plant

TSMC has achieved profitability at its Japanese plant for the first time. The joint venture in Kumamoto, known as Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM), recorded a net profit of nearly $30 million in the first quarter of this year. The success of the plant, which previously operated at a loss, is attributed to full capacity utilization. This is reported by Ixbt.com news.

Currently, the plant produces 12, 16, 22, and 28-nanometer chips for the automotive and industrial sectors. The company has also begun construction of a second plant in Japan. Originally intended for 6-nanometer technology, this project is being upgraded to 3-nanometer technology due to rising demand for AI and high-performance processors.

Operations in the US are also developing rapidly. The TSMC Arizona division recorded a profit of nearly $600 million in the first quarter. The company has now started construction of a third plant in the US and is preparing the site for a fourth facility. Total investments in US projects amount to $165 billion.

In Europe, the situation is slightly different: the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. plant under construction in Dresden, Germany, is still in the construction phase and remains a source of expenditure for the company. By expanding its global manufacturing footprint, TSMC aims to reduce dependence on Taiwan and meet the global demand for AI chips.
