Google Search users begin switching to DuckDuckGo

Following Google's active integration of AI features into its search engine, DuckDuckGo has seen a sharp increase in downloads and visitor numbers. At its developer conference, Google introduced a new search version where AI-generated answers replace traditional link lists. The system can now summarize information, perform complex tasks, and operate in a conversational mode. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
However, many users have reacted negatively to these changes. Critics argue that AI summaries degrade search quality and reduce traffic to independent websites and media resources. The limited ability to disable AI features and their deep integration into standard search are causing user dissatisfaction.
Against this backdrop, DuckDuckGo reported that app installations in the US rose by an average of 18.1% between May 20 and May 25. On the Apple iOS platform, downloads grew by an average of 33%, and by nearly 70% on some days. Additionally, interest in a special search mode that operates without AI summaries and automatically generated images increased by 22.7%.
DuckDuckGo founder Gabriel Weinberg criticized Google's direction, noting that AI features are being forced upon users. Nevertheless, DuckDuckGo has not completely abandoned artificial intelligence. The company is developing the Duck.ai service, which allows the use of models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta, but places primary emphasis on user privacy and data security.
Currently, alternative search engines like Brave, Ecosia, and Startpage have also become more active. The situation shows that while major platforms are turning search into a conversation with AI, a portion of users prefers simple links, manual source selection, and independent control over the process.
