Black founders have raised the most investment since 2022

According to Crunchbase, startups founded by Black entrepreneurs in the U.S. have raised $643 million since the beginning of the year. This figure was last seen in 2022 ($653 million). For comparison, while Black founders raised a total of $942 million in venture funding last year, they have reached nearly 70% of that total in just a few months this year. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
Several major deals can be cited as the main drivers of this growth. Specifically, AI hardware company SambaNova secured a $350 million Series E investment. Additionally, sports forecasting startup Noviq raised $75 million, and YC-backed AI insurance platform Harper raised $47 million. However, Crunchbase analysts are hesitant to call this growth full progress, as it is limited to a total of 34 deals.
Although $643 million seems like a record amount, it represents a very small fraction of the $252 billion in total capital raised by U.S. startups during the same period. In an interview with TechCrunch, Gené Teare, head of research at Crunchbase, emphasized that Black founders still face difficulties in accessing networks, building connections, and securing initial introductions.
Currently, the venture market is experiencing a unique stagnation, and the decline in funding directed toward Black founders is happening faster than the overall market downturn. Experts believe that excessive caution in the industry is preventing investors from taking risks on first-time founders, who are often from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
