Gelatin Biogenerator: Method for Harvesting Electricity from Atmospheric Humidity Discovered

Scientists from Queen Mary University of London, the University of Warwick, and Imperial College have created a sustainable and biodegradable Moisture-Electric Generator (MEG) that converts atmospheric humidity into electricity. The uniqueness of this invention lies in the fact that it is made entirely from food products—gelatin, table salt, and activated carbon—making it completely safe for the environment and human health. This was reported by Ixbt.com reports .

While humidity is considered a harmful factor for traditional electronics, MEG technology uses it as an energy source. When the gelatin and salt mixture dries, it forms a three-layer structure. Under the influence of moisture, ions begin to move freely within these layers, and a single module provides a stable voltage of about 1 volt for over 30 days. By connecting several modules in series, scientists managed to obtain a voltage of up to 90 volts and a current of 5.08 mA, which is enough to power 40 LED lights.

The new material acts not only as an energy source but also as a highly sensitive sensor. The response of electrical signals to changes in humidity is so precise that it can be used for monitoring breathing, detecting speech through airflow, and in contactless control interfaces. This opens up great prospects, especially for wearable medical devices and human-machine interfaces.

The most important advantage of the device is its environmental friendliness. After use, the generator decomposes in the soil within a few weeks or dissolves in water, returning its components to nature without causing harm. Free from plastics and heavy metals, this technology is expected to usher in the era of "circular" electronics.
