According to EastFruit, wholesale watermelon prices in Uzbekistan have dropped nearly threefold in just one week, reports NOVA24.
The main reason is a surge in domestic supply. Large shipments of watermelons arrived at Tashkent’s wholesale markets earlier than usual — between May 16 and 22.
On May 23, prices peaked at 7,000 UZS per kg — the highest since 2021. But by May 30, prices plummeted to 2,500 UZS/kg — a 2.8x drop, marking the fastest weekly decline in five years.
By the end of May, prices were twice as low as during the same period in 2024, though still 25% higher than in 2023.
The sharp decline could stimulate exports. Since 2020, watermelon has been a key export product in Uzbekistan’s fruit and vegetable sector. In 2023, the country exported a record 104.7 thousand tons of watermelon. Read “Zamin” on Telegram!
