A modern project aimed at further strengthening pedestrian safety has been implemented in Uzbekistan. An intelligent pedestrian crossing operating on the basis of artificial intelligence has been launched in the Tashkent region, according to the regional administration’s press service.
This innovative project is planned to be implemented in a pilot phase in the city of Nurafshon. The automated system detects pedestrians participating in traffic and alerts drivers with the signal “Attention, pedestrian!”.
This warning works not only during the day but also at night — when the system detects a person crossing the road, it uses special projectors to display a “Pedestrian crossing” sign on the road surface.
In addition, the zebra lines are equipped with special lighting technology. This allows drivers to see the pedestrian crossing from a greater distance. The goal is to attract the driver’s attention as much as possible while driving.
According to the project initiators, this system should become an important factor in preventing road traffic accidents involving pedestrians. Especially in the evening, when lighting is insufficient, this function will be particularly useful.
While such technologies are already widely used in developed countries, Uzbekistan has now also taken a step in this direction. If the pilot tests in Nurafshon are successfully completed, the system is planned to be introduced first in other cities of the Tashkent region and later throughout the country.
The success of the project depends not only on the technical aspect but also on public response and a culture of active use. If every driver and pedestrian uses the system effectively, the level of safety on the roads can significantly increase.
Such initiatives are an important step in Uzbekistan’s journey toward digitalizing transportation infrastructure, improving safety, and aligning with international standards.
Therefore, the public is expected to treat the new system with attention and respect and to support it in practice. Only then will “smart” zebra crossings truly serve to protect human lives in real life.
