Uzbekistan has begun working on the development of a project to build a large nuclear power plant, Kursiv.media reported.
Specialists from “Uzatom” are studying the possibilities of integrating the plant into the national energy system. According to agency director Azim Ahmedkhodjayev, work is planned to start soon and necessary research is already underway. The project could be implemented in parallel with the construction of a small NPP in Jizzakh region.
The project’s prospects were discussed at a meeting on Tashkent’s energy supply with the participation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Energy Minister Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov first announced plans for a high-capacity NPP in October 2024.
On June 20, 2025, “Rosatom” and “Uzatom” signed an agreement to conduct research for building a large NPP and approved a roadmap for the project’s development until 2027. The plant is expected to have two or four power units with VVER-1000 reactors.
