Uzbekistan will introduce an environmental fee system for certain types of products. This was reported in a special presentation by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change to the President on August 14.
Which products will be subject to the eco-fee?
At the first stage, the new procedure will apply to the following 6 types of goods:
-
batteries and accumulators;
-
vehicles;
-
lubricants;
-
packaging products;
-
tires and rubber tubes;
-
glass products.
According to the ministry, most of the country's waste is currently sent to landfills, and the recycling rate remains quite low. For example, only 17% of tires, 6.3% of glass, and 11.2% of plastics are recycled.
Waste volumes and future forecasts
The annual volume of waste is very large: plastics — 1.8 million tons, electronic waste — 144 thousand tons, glass — 647 thousand tons, oil — 250 tons, and rubber — 217 thousand units. In addition, by 2035, the volume of electrical waste is expected to increase by another 10 thousand tons.
The introduction of the environmental fee is aimed at developing the waste recycling system, reducing environmental damage, and ensuring the efficient use of resources. This will help increase recycling capacity and reduce the flow of waste to landfills.
