In the coming years, travel time between Tashkent and Samarkand may be reduced by 1.5 hours. Behind this plan, which at first glance seems like a simple railway project, lie major infrastructural changes. According to Spot, citing a presentation by the Ministry of Transport, several options have been developed for the new high-speed rail route.
According to Deputy Minister of Transport Jasurbek Choriyev, the feasibility study for the project was prepared based on a grant from the Export-Import Bank of Korea. From the beginning of 2025, 6 new Hyundai Rotem trains will begin serving passengers.
The new highway will start from the new international airport in Tashkent and will reach Samarkand directly. This is intended to separate freight and passenger transportation and facilitate transit. Due to the lack of such capabilities on existing railways, the need for a new separate line was emphasized.
3 alternative options have been developed:
Variant 1: 282 km, 1 hour 26 minutes, average speed - 185.7 km/h
Variant 2: 291.7 km, 1 hour 33 minutes, speed 179.4 km/h
Option 3: 302 km, 1 hour 45 minutes, 166.9 km/h
The construction of dozens of bridges and tunnels is planned in each variant. Currently, the Export-Import Bank of China and the European Investment Bank are also interested in financing this project.
