Prisoners have been granted the right to make video calls

The new amendments introduced to the Criminal Enforcement Code are expanding communication opportunities for prisoners. Under the new law, individuals deprived of liberty have been granted the right to hold remote video meetings with their relatives. The relevant document was adopted on January 15, 2026, and will enter into force from the date of its official publication.

In accordance with the law, prisoners will be entitled to a one-time remote video meeting or a telephone conversation lasting 15 minutes, paid for from their personal funds. This measure is primarily aimed at preventing the disruption of prisoners’ contact with their family members and loved ones.

Previously, such communication was limited to a single 15-minute telephone call. Now, video communication has also been legally закреплено and is offered to prisoners as an additional option.

According to experts, the introduction of remote video meetings is expected to help maintain prisoners’ social ties, support psychological stability, and further expand the use of modern technologies within the penal enforcement system.
