North Korea sends additional troops to Russia

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has decided to send additional troops to Russia to participate in the war in Ukraine. This was reported on January 24 by the South Korean Yonhap news agency.

According to reports, North Korea previously sent 11,000 soldiers to Russia, but within four months a third of them were lost. Several soldiers were captured. Nevertheless, Pyongyang plans to send additional forces to provide military assistance to Moscow.

On January 22, Pentagon sources told The New York Times (NYT) that North Korea would send new troops to Russia in the next two months. However, the exact number was not given.

Earlier reports said that Moscow was paying Pyongyang $2,000 per soldier. This amount is said to be equivalent to 83 years of salary for a North Korean citizen.
