Saudi Arabia will be the country where US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin will hold a face-to-face meeting to discuss ways to end Russia's war in Ukraine. This was stated in Trump's statement to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, February 12, a few hours after his telephone conversation with the Russian president.
"We will meet in Saudi Arabia," the US president was quoted as saying by AFP. Even during his election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly stressed his intention to achieve an end to the war in Ukraine.
In a conversation with reporters, Trump also said that he does not consider Ukraine's membership in NATO advisable and that, in his opinion, there is "no way" that Kiev will return all the territories under Russian control.
Trump's phone conversation with Putin
As CNN noted, the phone conversation between Trump and Putin, reported by the White House and Kremlin press services on February 12, is the first confirmed phone conversation since the beginning of Trump's second term as US president.
According to Trump, the presidents "agreed to stop the deaths of millions of people in the war between Russia and Ukraine." Therefore, according to him, the politicians agreed that their teams would "immediately begin negotiations." The US president promised to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and inform him about the conversation.
"I have asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Representative Steve Witkoff to lead the talks," he added.
According to CNN, Trump spoke with Zelensky around noon on February 12, shortly after his phone call with Putin.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that during the conversation, the Russian leader invited Donald Trump to visit Moscow. According to the Kremlin, the conversation between Putin and Trump lasted about 90 minutes. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
