Callas: The agreement on Ukraine without the EU will fail
Any peace deal on Ukraine without Europe will be "unsuccessful," Kaia Kallas, the EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, told DW. She attended a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels on Thursday, February 13.

"Any deal without us will fail, because Europe and Ukraine must also implement it," the European diplomat stressed. "Any quick solution is an unclean deal... It will not stop the killing, it will not stop the war," Kallas added.

“A wider conflict must be avoided”

The politician also drew parallels between the current situation around Ukraine and the 1938 Munich Agreement with Czechoslovakia, when Czechoslovakia requested arms assistance. “Now we must also help Ukraine defend itself from aggression, so that there is no wider conflict,” the EU high representative said.

The talks in Brussels were attended, among others, by the head of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, Rustem Umerov, as well as the heads of the US and German defense departments, Pete Hegseth and Boris Pistorius.

Kallas clarified that she had met with Umerov. “If Ukraine decides to resist, Europe... will support Ukraine,” she said, adding that this refers to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, which the European Union also adheres to.
