Countries that spend the most on the military

After becoming president of the United States, Donald Trump began to take the initiative to reduce defense spending. In particular, he announced his intention to hold negotiations with Russia and China on reducing defense spending after the end of the war in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

Trump also intends to resume negotiations with Russia and China on reducing the number of nuclear weapons. So, how much money do countries around the world spend on the military?

According to Al Jazeera, citing analysis by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending is expected to increase by 6.8 percent in 2023 to $2.44 trillion. This amounts to $306 per capita.

For comparison, in 2000, global military spending was $798 billion, or $130 per capita. Over the past 23 years, the amount allocated to the military has more than tripled.

Countries with the largest military budgets

The United States is the country that spends the most on the military. According to SIPRI, the United States' defense budget in 2023 was $880 billion. This is more than the combined spending of the next eight countries.

China ($309 billion), Russia ($126 billion), India ($83 billion) and Saudi Arabia ($74 billion) also had significantly larger defense budgets.

When it comes to military spending relative to gross domestic product, Ukraine has the highest figure at 36.7 percent. Lebanon, which spent 8.9 percent of its GDP, is in second place, followed by Algeria (8.2 percent), Saudi Arabia (7.1 percent) and South Sudan (6.3 percent). Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
