US President Donald Trump said that a ceasefire in Ukraine will not be established "soon" or "never," Deutsche Welle reported.
Trump said that "big progress" had already been made in the negotiations. Asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin could be trusted, he replied, "trust but verify." At the same time, the US president stressed that if a peace treaty is signed, "he doesn't think Putin will break it and invade Ukraine again."
Trump was also asked if he was concerned that the deployment of European peacekeeping forces to Ukraine would trigger Article 5 of the NATO treaty. Under this article, all countries of the alliance are obliged to help a member that is under attack.
"I don't think we have any reason to do that," the US president said.
He noted that he supports the NATO mission specified in this article. Trump refused to talk about the details of a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. He stressed that he wants to achieve a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev first.
Keir Starmer: Great Britain is ready to send troops to Ukraine
At a joint press conference with the US president on February 27, the British Prime Minister confirmed that London is ready to deploy ground troops and aviation in Ukraine together with allies. He called this "the only way to ensure a lasting peace."
According to Keir Starmer, he and Trump talked about a "tough but fair deal" in which Ukraine plays a decisive role and is supported by military force.
The deal is designed to ensure that Putin is not willing to ask for more, the DPA agency reported.
This should not be a peace that rewards the aggressor. History should be on the side of the aggressor, not the peacemaker, Starmer said.
Otherwise, he said, there is a risk of new “Iranian-like regimes” emerging. Starmer said representatives of 18 European countries are planning to meet to discuss a peace treaty for Ukraine.
