Several senior officials in Washington have suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may have to resign in order to reach a peace deal. According to AFP on Sunday, March 2, the statements indicate a surprising shift in the approach of US President Donald Trump's administration to Russia's war in Ukraine.
Thus, US President Donald Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz explained the situation in an interview with CNN. "We need a leader who can work with us, who can ultimately work with the Russians and end this war," Waltz said.
“If it becomes clear that President Zelensky’s personal or political goals are at odds with his desire to end the fighting in this country, I think we have a real problem,” he said.
House Speaker: Zelensky needs to come to his senses
Meanwhile, US House Speaker Mike Johnson said on March 2 that in order for Ukraine to move forward on a peace deal, Zelensky “has to come to his senses and come back to the negotiating table with gratitude or someone else has to lead the country.” “President (Donald) Trump is trying to bring these two sides to peace,” Johnson said in an interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press.
“What President Zelensky did in the White House was basically a signal to us that he’s not ready for this (deal) yet, and I think that’s a big disappointment,” Johnson added.
