German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has spoken out against the disarmament of Ukraine and the formation of a pro-Russian government in the country. He said this at the end of a summit in London on Sunday, March 2.
“This is a country that has been attacked, a victim of a major aggression. This is an undeniable truth for everyone. And, of course, this means that we must act accordingly,” Scholz said. According to him, “Ukraine is a European country that has decided to join the European Union. It is a democratic country and it should be that way.”
“Another thing is clear to us: this means that we must support Ukraine both financially and militarily. International and transatlantic support for Ukraine remains crucial for the country's and Europe's security," the German chancellor continued.
Scholz opposes demilitarization of Ukraine
"The Russian point of view is unacceptable. Russia's goal has always been to create a government in Ukraine that dances to the Russian tune. That is unacceptable," Scholz said.
"The second issue is demilitarization. Russia constantly demands this, but that is unacceptable. On the contrary, Ukraine must be strong enough to ensure that it will never be attacked again - based on the experience of this country, its citizens and all of us. That will also be crucial for the future," the chancellor added.
According to him, the starting point for peace talks between Moscow and Kiev could be an end to Russia's shelling of Ukraine. "It would be very useful if the bombing were stopped," Scholz said. "It would be a starting point for negotiations that could continue later."
